General Practice Residency Program
The Department of General Dentistry offers a one-year accredited General Practice Residency Program. The goal of this program is to increase residents' skills in all areas of dentistry with emphasis on hospital dentistry and care of the medically compromised patient. The program is designed to prepare competent general practitioners, capable of providing comprehensive, modern dental care. In keeping with the generalist concept, the majority of patient care is supervised by general dentist faculty, all of whom have had between one and three years of advanced general dentistry training. In addition, residents also will work weekly with orthodontists, periodontists, endodontists and prosthodontists.
The program begins on or about June 26 of each year. All residents receive a stipend and benefits which includes medical insurance. There are currently 7 first year positions, and an optional second year of the GPR is available for one or two residents each year.
Residents provide care in several locations: the Advanced General Dentistry Clinic in the Dental School, the Hospital Dentistry Clinic in University Hospital, as well as the operating rooms and Emergency Center also within the University Hospital, and the Dental Clinic in the Audie Murphy Veteran’s Administration Hospital. This variety provides an exceptional opportunity to learn from numerous generalists and specialists in a structured yet flexible educational environment.
